Guest-written entry

This entry will be guest-written due to acute writer’s block and a moribund mind that has endured the excruciation of the good ol’ advertising industry for the past 2 weeks. Poor Sherve.

So hi there, my name is Ie Tjer. I knew Sherve as a friend first about a year back and today, it will be her last day working as an English copywriter in-training for the agency I work in.

I am and shall be eternally grateful to her for voluntarily taking the little time she had in Malaysia before going back to Sheffield to actually come and help me out with my unceasing workload. Being the only English writer in the agency prior to her engagement as an intern-writer, I was forced to act and become a constant stuck-up and an unaffectionate bitch in the office as a self-defence mechanism towards the filthy act of exploitation and victimisation by the Client Servicing bastards. Since she joined us 2 weeks ago, I AM STILL a constant stuck-up and an unaffectionate bitch in the office, the difference is that Sherve diverts most of the attention away from me because evidently, the hot-blooded (horny) guys in my office have been very much divested of good-looking girls all throughout their lives. Yes, like every other advertising agency out there, the one I work in is a lair housing a bunch of perverts waiting to pounce on every decent-looking girl who steps through the infamous sand-blasted glass door.

Hence, it came as no-brainer that when Sherve stepped into the office on her first day, the sexual tensions and aura in the office erupted like a live volcano. To my horror, guys in my office started flirting with her, adding her on instant messengers to rehearse their tickle-myself-funny pick-up lines, wangling her to go on dates and even tried manipulating her to spend a night in a 5-star hotel! Of course, being the level-headed hottie that she is, she survived the 2 weeks without a hint of trauma towards men or signs of turning into a lesbian (although, this I’m not too sure).

In all seriousness and fairness, Sherve has been a wonderful colleague to work with. She is intelligent, smart, pretty (for motivation, sometimes), funny, has a myriad of wonderful ideas to contribute during brainstorming sessions, very outgoing and has been a great help for the sad, sad English copywriting department. It astonished me to no end that a law student carries such great magnitude of creativity in her thoughts and words. Advertising needs minds like hers – young and fresh.

She has been a wonderful lunch partner too, though I’m pretty sure that is not a mutual feeling she shares as she has been a victim of my incurable sarcasm all the time. Our lunch usually lasts up to 2 or 3 hours, so I guess that speaks a lot to what great company she has been during the usually sleepiest hours of my days. Sherve also has this inexplicable craving for the Bubble Milk Tea in Midvalley, a craving I find very adorable. (Sorry, that Bubble Milk Tea fact was totally random.)

Anyway, like I said, today will be her last day as an intern. She will be flying back to the UK in another week or two to continue her law studies. I will definitely miss her a lot as a friend. It’s disheartening that when you are finally getting to know someone better, you’ll be separated thousands of miles apart across land and seas.

In regards to the entry she wrote about her experience in advertising, a lot of you friends commented that Sherve should try out advertising instead. From my understanding, she developed a strong liking to advertising too, but perhaps she is just lacking some confidence or maybe YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST NOT SUPPORTING ENOUGH!

So, I have started a petition (surprise, surprise, Sherve!) for Lum Sher Vin. A petition to encourage her to try something she really, really likes and wants to do after she completes her law studies in about 2 years time. If she wants to be a writer, she should just bloody well do it. You only live once, right? :)

From the words of a very talented writer-in-making: "Once upon a time, there lived a little girl who, when she grew up, aspired to be a nerd. You earn the big bucks, dress up in crisp, smart corporate outfits and best of all, you.... wooohoo! You earn the big bucks!!

Nevertheless, as this little girl grew older, she formed this notion that money wasn't everything.

Surely, there was more to life than spending it amassing trillions of Ringgit hunched over an office desk?"

Please sign this petition for Sherve, as an encouragement and a show of faith to her doing whatever she aspires to do knowing that many of her friends are supporting her.

To conclude this seemingly endless novel of an entry, I’ve to say that I’m grateful that I gave her to opportunity to try something different and I hope she is glad to have taken this small leap of faith.

Maybe it’s time to start changing lives using the pen instead of mouth, eh?
